THIS VIDEO: Essentially, he’s attempting to define beauty as it applies to photography. He was motivated to discover for himself why certain images encapsuled what he felt was ‘a quality’ that was in some way transcendent. That’s my word, not his… but I think it helps to clarify the idea of a quality of beauty. Perhaps he would think that I am flirting with woo-woo just by using it. He isn’t offering us a 10-point plan to achieve beauty in photography, rather he’s explaining how he responds to certain works and how he’s able to make sense of their significance. The value for us, the readers, is that we are able to draw on his ideas and hopefully regain a beauty-driven purpose in our photographic practice. Adams believes that the goal of art is Beauty and this is defined by form.
