Bus drivers in Minneapolis and NYC are refusing to transport protesters, and unions throughout the country have expressed support for the rebellion. This working-class solidarity is a key step in building the type of multi-racial working class movement that will be necessary to win the prosecution of killer cops and end militarized racist policing. With bloated police budgets and cuts to education and social services looming, the labor movement needs to build on this through mass mobilizations and even strike action against racism, budget cuts, and inequality. In the midst of the coronavirus crisis and economic depression, which are disproportionately impacting black and brown communities, these protests reflect a rage at not just the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others. Tens of millions face unemployment while corporations rake in record profits under the coronavirus crisis, millions can’t make rent and are struggling to put food on the table, and many more have to choose between their health and going back to work: the whole system is killing us. We cannot rely on the political establishment to fight racism. Beyond well crafted statements from Democrats lie decades of inaction, billion dollar police budgets, and the damning records of Democratic Governors, Mayors, and city councils who hold power in nearly every major city where police brutality is a feature of life in low-income neighborhoods. We need a new party, of by and for working people, that is accountable to the movement to end police brutality and racism, and that will fight tooth and nail to root out all forms of oppression. To win #JusticeforGeorgeFloyd, and to fight police brutality, we have to expand this struggle among the wider working class, youth, and communities of color. We need mass protests, a sustained, coordinated structure, and demands for the movement that go beyond just jailing killer cops. To end police brutality, racism, and economic inequality, we need to organize against the capitalist system itself, which lies at the root of all oppression and exploitation.
