The Stations of the Cross (Latin: Via Crucis; lit. "Way of the Cross"), also called the Stations of the Cross, refers to the path that Jesus took carrying the cross, from the Praetorium to Calvary, where he died. By meditating on the Stations of the Cross, the baptized are invited to renew their faith, strengthen their devotion and commit themselves to living according to the teachings of Christ in their daily lives. The Stations can be 14 or 15 (Resurrection), depending on the tradition of each liturgical environment. These are the Stations: I. Jesus is condemned to death (Mt 27, 22-26): Pilate, pressured by the crowd, washes his hands and hands Jesus over to be crucified. II. Jesus carries the Cross (Jn 19, 16-17): Jesus is carried with the Cross on his back towards Calvary. III. Jesus falls for the first time (Is 53:4-6): Under the weight of the Cross, Jesus falls for the first time. IV. Jesus meets his Mother Mary (Jn 19:25-27): Mary meets Jesus on his way to Calvary. V. Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the Cross (Mk 15:21): Simon is forced to help Jesus carry the Cross. VI. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus (tradition): A woman named Veronica wipes the face of Jesus with her veil, and the image of her face is imprinted on the cloth. VII. Jesus falls for the second time (Is 53:4-6): Jesus, exhausted, falls again under the weight of the Cross. VIII. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem (Lk 23:27-31): Jesus addresses words of comfort to the women who mourn him. IX. Jesus falls for the third time (Is 53:4-6): Jesus falls for the last time before reaching Calvary. X. Jesus is stripped of his clothes (Jn 19:23-24): The soldiers strip Jesus of his clothes and divide them among themselves. XI. Jesus is nailed to the Cross (Lk 23:33): Jesus is crucified between two criminals. XII. Jesus dies on the Cross (Lk 23:44-46): Jesus gives up his spirit to the Father. XIII. Jesus is taken down from the Cross and given to Mary (Jn 19:38-42): Jesus' body is taken down from the Cross and given to his mother. XIV. Jesus is buried in the tomb (Mt 27:57-61): Jesus' body is placed in the tomb, where it remains until his resurrection. XV. (Optional) Jesus is raised from the dead. The practice of the Stations of the Cross is an opportunity for the faithful to reflect on the deeper meaning of Christ's passion in their own lives. By accompanying Jesus on his path of suffering and redemption, the baptized are invited to consider Jesus' sacrifice as an act of unconditional love and a source of hope and salvation.
