Sidmouth Folk Festival, 1981, and one of our performances was captured for a BBC 2 documentary, "The Sidmouth Invasion"*. This was one of Ted's classics which told a rather tawdry tale. His introduction to the song was legendary and had everyone in stitches, including the band, but it had to be toned down for the Beeb! Nowadays, no one would give a damn. It was an unusual arrangement for us, using two recorders as well as the more usual array of fretted instruments. Les Penning, our record producer, was a true master of the recorder (he played recorder on many Mike Oldfield records) and he wanted us to feature this recorder duet. He also had us singing ghostly backing vocals on the LP recording, wailing "Joan... Joan..." over an over again, faintly in the background. Sidmouth Folk Festival that year was a hoot for us. As well as playing and singing in various concerts we took advantage of unusually calm seas to do a spot of water skiing! (Do not be alarmed, folkies, they were hand-crafted water skis and even our wet suits were made by band members and friends. We were very handy in those days.) Phil was the most accomplished water skier, on one or two skis. Jem also was very good and made a handsome sight, ploughing the waves. Sometimes we had two or three of us being towed behind the boat and exchanging verbal abuse as we glided over the sea. Ted, being tough and wiry, shot out of the water like a whippet from a starting gate! And at 6'5" Martin was an astonishing sight to behold... a giant slowly emerging from the waves like a Grecian sea monster, salt water pouring off him in torrents! Ahh, we had such fun! The music was good, too! [*This video was a rough-cut edit made for the BBC producer to preview... the final version, which regrettably we cannot procure, was obviously broadcast quality. The finished version is now in the BFI National Archive, so we've become a national treasure, astonishing as that may seem!]
