AKALALI, REFORMER OR DESTROYER OF OKANISI MAROON CULTURE AND RELIGION PART 3 By: André R.M. Pakosie In this third part of the video documentary series, I explain the grievances expressed by the delegation of young people then in Diitabiki during the meeting with the traditional authority in December 1969, in which they asked the Gaanman, Kabiten and Basiya to change them. They demanded the abolition of the 'Teke Gadulaï'. The 'Teke Gadulaï' meant that when a person died and was labelled a 'Wisiman' (practitioner of negative magic), his family had to take all his possessions to Diitabiki and hand them over to the servants of the great deity, the Sweli Gadu. They also brought up the need to abolish 'Towé sama'. Towé sama was the way in which the body of a person identified as a Wisiman was treated after death. They were not given a humane burial. They also raised the need to reduce the usual mourning period from 12 to six months. In this part 3 I also tell how in 1970 da Akalali, in his capacity as a medium, was tak-en by his matrilineal family to the village of Loabi of the Gaán Pinasi Lo on the Tapanahoni, where he and his matrilineal family had lived for decades. And how a few weeks later, at his direction, he was taken to Diitabiki for his first meeting as a medium with the Gaanman and the Sweli Gadu. When he appeared before the Gaanman and the Sweli Gadu, it was striking that da Akalali listed exactly the same things that the delegation had listed as grievances in December 1969, and which the wenti allegedly manifested in him wanted to abolish. Remarkably, when he met with the Gaanman and the Sweli Gadu, it was the very things that the delegation had identified as grievances during the meeting with the traditional authority, and about which agreements had already been made, that da Akalali and his Wenti said they would do away with.
