In the spring of 1879, over 6,000 African Americans fled the South in just three months, seeking freedom in Kansas. This is the true story of the largest Black migration in American history up to that point—a grassroots exodus of families who sold everything they owned for steamboat tickets north. Discover Benjamin "Pap" Singleton, the former slave who became the "Moses of the Colored Exodus." Follow Henry Adams and his Colonization Council, which gathered nearly 100,000 signatures from people desperate to leave. Explore Nicodemus, Kansas—founded in 1877 and still surviving today as the only remaining Black pioneer town west of the Mississippi. They left behind sharecropping debt, the Ku Klux Klan's terror, and ballot boxes guarded by armed men. What they found in Kansas was complicated: dugout homes, harsh winters, drought, and hard land. But also something they'd never had—the chance to own land, vote without fear, and build communities on their own terms. This is frontier history often left out of the story. The Exodusters were true pioneers facing the same brutal conditions as every frontier settler, while carrying the additional burden of racism from both the South they fled and the West that didn't always welcome them.
