In this video, we break down the shocking case of former Rio Arriba County Sheriff James Lujan, who interfered with a police arrest while allegedly intoxicated. In March 2020, Española Police officers arrived at the home of former Española City Councilor Phillip Chacon to carry out an arrest. Unexpectedly, Sheriff Lujan showed up at the scene and began interfering with officers attempting to take Chacon into custody. Bodycam footage shows the tense confrontation as officers refused to be intimidated by the sheriff despite his attempts to obstruct the arrest. The situation escalated even further when investigators later obtained a search warrant for Lujan’s cell phone, believing it contained evidence that he had helped Chacon avoid law enforcement. When officers arrived to execute the warrant, the sheriff allegedly barricaded himself inside his office and refused to cooperate, delaying the investigation and creating a tense standoff inside the sheriff’s department building. Eventually, officers forced the situation forward and placed the sheriff under arrest. After a trial in Santa Fe, a jury found Lujan guilty of aiding a felon and intimidating a witness. In December 2021, a judge sentenced him to three years in prison followed by supervised probation. The judge stated clearly that while all public officials have responsibilities, sheriffs are held to an even higher standard under the law. This bodycam breakdown examines the confrontation, the investigation, and the legal consequences that followed. ⚠️ Viewer Discretion Disclaimer: This video discusses sensitive topics including death and criminal activity.
