Wonder is a 2D side-scrolling jump ‘n’ run from the world-renowned and highly successful Super Mario series by Nintendo, released on October 20, 2023, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. The game follows the 2D Mario titles Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker 2, as well as the WiiU port New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, marking the first new 2D Mario game in nearly 11 years! (New Super Mario Bros. U, WiiU, 2012). After years of internal challenges, the Nintendo EPD team brainstormed over 2,000 fresh ideas on sticky notes for a new 2D Mario game, and shortly after finishing Super Mario Maker 2, they began working on prototypes for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which would revolutionize side-scrolling 2D Mario games. The developers quickly came up with the idea to make the levels unique and surprising, incorporating "Wonders" based on their sticky notes. For example, when the player collects a Wonder Flower, stationary pipes on the ground may suddenly twist, the player might float in the air, or run on walls, among many other surprises! With a generous budget allocated by the higher-ups, the team took their time to bring their ideas to life—Super Mario Bros. Wonder had no deadline! In addition to groundbreaking gameplay ideas, a lot of care and passion went into the sound design and animations. Mario, the world, and even the enemies have never appeared as lively as in this game! Along with familiar enemies like Goombas and Koopas, there are many new enemies living in the "Flower Kingdom," the new game world of SMBW. The number of playable characters has also increased. In addition to Mario and his brother Luigi, players can also play as Peach, Daisy, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, Toadette, Green Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi, Blue Yoshi, Red Yoshi, and Mopsie. However, they all behave the same, as special abilities are now tied to "badges" instead of characters. These badges can be selected before each level and offer abilities like gliding with a hat or starting levels with a Super Mushroom. Special cases include Yoshi and Mopsie, who take no damage, making them suitable for beginners—though they cannot access power-ups. However, Yoshis still have their flutter jump and long tongue. Each level contains numerous secrets, sometimes including secret exits and 3 10-coin purple coins. These purple coins can be exchanged in shops for valuable items, stands, and badges. The beautifully designed overworld is no longer strictly linear, offering more open areas in its 7+ worlds where players can choose levels freely. The game can be played solo or with up to 3 friends. There are no collisions anymore, which changes the online mode. Now, the goal is to help rather than troll. Story: The Mushroom Kingdom delegation meets Prince Florian and the Poplins of the Flower Kingdom when suddenly Bowser appears, touches a Wonder Flower, and merges with Prince Florian’s castle.
