(19 May 2001) 1. Various of car with bullet holes 2. Various exterior of emergency ward at hospital STORYLINE: Gunmen shot and killed a top Sunni Muslim leader and four of his companions in the restive port city of Karachi on Friday in the latest incident of religiously motivated violence, police said. Saleem Qadri, the leader of a Muslim organisation called Sunni Tehrik, was on his way to a mosque for Friday prayers when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle from close range in the western neighborhood of Baldia Town. Qadri, his guard and three relatives died in the attack, while his 10-year-old son and two others were critically wounded, police said. The gunmen fled after the attack and no arrests were made. No other details were immediately available. Qadri's Sunni Tehrik, considered a nonviolent religious group, has sharp differences with rival Sunni Muslim organisations. In recent months scores of people have been killed throughout Pakistan in religious violence. Most killings are the result of rivalry between extremist Sunni Muslim and Shiite Muslim groups. But often hardline Sunni Muslim factions also target each others' supporters. Sunni Muslims, a majority in Islamic Pakistan, are divided into several schools of thought, which are often at loggerheads over small religious issues such as dress or beard length. Shiite Muslims, who comprise 15 percent of the population, are the main target of extremist Sunni Muslim organisations.
