SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Hugo Chavez, Venezuelan President: "We have to invoke the unity of Latin America with Asia and Africa. Remake the agenda of the south. We have to relaunch the solidarity of the south." 18. Wide of stage STORYLINE: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called for unity between Latin American and Asian nations on Friday on the first of his four day trip to India to discuss a long term oil-supply deal. Chavez was expected to sign energy and cooperation agreements during his stay. Addressing a large crowd of students at New Delhi''s Jawaharlal Nehru University, Chavez said his country was the world''s fifth-largest oil exporter, but that for a long time its benefits had been reaped by the US. Earlier in the day, he had warned that Venezuela would cut off oil supplies to the United States if Washington tries to "hurt" his country, news reports said. "If there is any aggression, there will be no oil," said Chavez. His country is a major supplier of oil and gas to the United States. But it wants to reduce its dependence on the US market by its expanding its exports to elsewhere. He also ruled out the possibility of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries raising the current oil output. Relations between the United States and Venezuela have deteriorated steadily since Chavez took office in February 1999. Chavez''s populist rhetoric and his leftist aversion to US style free market economics have left the two countries at loggerheads. Last month, Chavez and Cuban President Fidel Castro accused the United States of trying to assassinate the Venezuelan leader. The US State Department denied the allegations. Chavez has charged repeatedly that the plot was a product of US imperialism.
