Ruellia tuberosa | cracker plant (popping pod) aka exploding seed pods Ruellia tuberosa botanical name of a plant that known as minnieroot, fever root, snapdragon root and sheep potato. It belongs to Acanthaceae family of flowering plant species. The tropical plant is native to Central America and widely found in South and Southeast Asia. It grows in grasslands and roadsides where there are moist and shady environments. Also, it is considered as weed plant as well as medical plant in Ayurvedic and folk medicine. The small plant has funnel or tube-shaped violet color flowers. The fruit is about 2 cm long capsule. The pod contains about 20 seeds. When you dip / rub a dried fruit in water or saliva, it crack / explode with pop sound. Therefore, it is also known as popping pod, duppy gun and cracker plant. IUCN listed the plant as least concern plant. In this video you can see Ruellia tuberosa plant and its flowers and fruits. The plant is found in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Also, you can see three types of demonstration of popping pod with natural sound. In the first attempt, water poured on a dried popping pod while it was on a plant, and it cracked and disappeared in split of a second. In the second and third attempts, some popping pods put on water and they exploded like crackers.
