(14 Aug 1996) Korean/Nat Thousands of South Korean riot police have stormed a Seoul college campus to break up a rally outlawed by the government as supportive of the communist North. The raid followed three days of violent clashes between students and police as youths demonstrate their support for reunification of the peninsula. The clashes continued through the night as students went into battle with riot police. About 400 students, throwing fire bombs and wielding metal pipes, fought running battles with police in front of the Yonsei University as they tried to march to the border with the communist north. They were attempting to greet two South Korean students returning through Panmunjom at the border following a visit to North Korea. The protesters are among some two-thousand students who gathered at the college for a three-day \"grand reunification festival\". The rally has become an annual event over the past decade - as have the clashes. The South Korean government has outlawed the Seoul rally as pro-North Korean and deployed five-thousand riot police to seal off the university. Riot police shot tear gas into the air and sometimes directly at the students. Both sides hurled rocks at each other. The students have also invited North Korean students to participate in the \"grand reunification festival\" in Seoul. The highlight of the festival is Thursday's Liberation Day when students will adopt a declaration on reunification of the Korean peninsula. Despite police efforts to completely seal off Yonsei University, students found ways of sneaking past the barricades. The National Federation of Student Councils held a news conference on the campus to talk about the growing stand-off between students and police. SOUNDBITE: (KOREAN) \"Not all but some of our colleagues have come into our school last night in groups of three or four. There were mainly students from the Seoul area at Yonsei as of yesterday but today, there are also students from surrounding areas and other parts. More students are continuing to try to get in. Our federation is making preparations to go on with the festival with the anticipated increase in participation.\" SUPER CAPTION: Park Jung-ohn, National Federation of Student Council The two students who had planned to return to South Korea Wednesday postponed their trip. But their colleagues in Seoul have continued their battle against the police.
