Speaker: Russell Poucher You will learn more about the commands necessary to use UNIX to increase your control over your desktop or server. You will also learn what scenarios are perfect for the command line. This session starts us at the basic level and explores just how powerful the command line can be. Our engineers will discuss the vast resources to help you further your education and transition into the command line world. OS X is built on an industry-standard UNIX foundation. The Terminal application allows you to access the complete UNIX environment using standard commands, tools, and scripting languages. Terminal includes numerous shortcuts that will save you time. For example, you can copy and paste text commands, and if you drag files or folders into Terminal, the correct file path appears on the command line. OS X Mavericks is built on a fully compliant UNIX foundation. This battle-tested core provides stability, performance, and security. And full UNIX conformance ensures compatibility with existing server and application software. Designed for "headless" operation, Mavericks Server enables administrators to install and configure services without needing to connect a display to the server. Powerful remote administration tools allow secure service management from anywhere on the network or over the Internet, and support for SSH provides secure access from the UNIX command line. To keep critical services up and running, Mavericks Server has built-in tools for monitoring systems, preventing accidental shutdown, and recovering services quickly in case of network or power failure. With Automator, shell scripts and AppleScript, you can accomplish time-consuming, repetitive manual tasks quickly, efficiently, and effortlessly. Automator lets you skip the complex programming and scripting that is normally required to create automations. Instead, you assemble individual steps into a complete task by dragging these actions into an Automator workflow. Presented at the 2014 MacAdmins Conference at Penn State.
