Dr. John Frino talks about the pediatric orthopedics program at Brenner Children's Hospital. https://www.brennerchildrens.org/Pedi... https://www.brennerchildrens.org/Pedi... TRANSCRIPT: We know kids are kids. And we know kids are going to play and kids are going to have injuries. But we do encourage parents to know what type of protective equipment is available and to know what protective equipment is appropriate for each activity such as wearing a helmet for riding a bicycle, or having only one child on a trampoline at each time to try to prevent that second child from being hurt. We know there are other activities that are not appropriate for children, such as riding an ATV for any child under 16 years of age or riding on a lawnmower even with an adult or a grandparent. We see injuries that are just devastating not only to the child because of a lawnmower injury, but to the family or the grandparent that is with the child at the time of the injury. And we see this every day and we try and encourage families that this is not appropriate. But if, unfortunately, it does happen, then Brenner Children's is equipped to take care of this. We take care of these types of injuries every day. Our Sports Medicine specialists are the same team doctors that take care of the Demon Deacons and so we have a wide array of Sports Medicine specialists to treat children with sports injuries. We're an academic medical center, so we're involved with clinical trials and research in order to try and figure out what's the best way to treat children not only with sports injuries, but traumatic injuries as well. We treat anything here at Brenner Children's Hospital from something as simple as a broken bone that may be treated with just a cast, to something more complex like a growth plate injury that make keep the child's arm or leg from growing properly. At Brenner Children's Hospital, we do have a team of experts from Pediatric Anesthesiologists who work directly with the Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons here- to the Pediatric Nurses in the Pediatric Recovery Room. After surgery, the children are admitted to pediatric wards with Pediatric Nurses and Child Life specialists. So here, we're equipped to take care of the child completely from the time in the Emergency Room to the time that they go through with their surgery to the time of discharge. I think that makes a difference in their outcome.
