Mid of Daniel Ortega and Montealegre shaking hands STORYLINE Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega, a former Marxist revolutionary who fought US-backed insurgents in the 1980s, promised to ease Nicaragua's deep poverty without scaring investors after officials confirmed his victory in presidential elections. Ortega's main opponent Eduardo Montealegre conceded defeat on Tuesday following the latest tally from Sunday's voting and congratulated Ortega on his win. Montealegre said it was time for Nicaragua and its people to move forward as they had both suffered enough through its turbulent political history. Ortega promised to work to eliminate poverty, reassure investors and "create a new political culture" that would put Nicaragua's people first especially the poor. He added that stability, encouraging investment and bringing the country out of poverty would be his focus. "What Nicaraguan people demand is that investment needs to remain opened to investors and financial sectors, as well as to social sectors so that united we could attack poverty and could create the jobs that Nicaraguans demand." With 91 percent of the vote counted, Ortega had 38 percent compared to 29 percent for Montealegre. Under Nicaraguan law, the winner of Sunday's election must have 35 percent of the vote and a 5 percentage-point lead to win outright and avoid a runoff. Ortega supporters filled the streets, waving black-and-red party flags and letting off fireworks. Earlier, Montealegre said he and his party's lawmakers would spend the next five years ensuring that Ortega stayed true to his pledges to promote private business, allow a free press and battle widespread poverty. Montealegre's newly formed Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance emerged as the strongest opposition party in Congress, with 27 percent of the vote compared to 38 percent for the Sandinistas. The exact number of seats for each party haven't yet been assigned. Ortega spent most of the 1980s fighting a U.S.-backed Contra insurgency. He lost the presidency in the 1990 election, ending Sandinista rule and years of civil war and has spent the past 16 years trying to get his old job back. The United States, which warned against an Ortega win, has declined to comment on the results.
