Chopin – Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 | performed on an 1875 Steinway Centennial Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9 No. 2 is without doubt his most well-known and frequently performed piano work. It has been played countless times, but in my view, all too often at a tempo that drags. The composer marked it Andante—not only as a tempo indication, but as a character. It should move with a gentle, singing flow. My interpretation has been compared to pianists of the early 20th century such as Cortot, Hofmann and Feinberg. Mark Ainley from The Piano Files, one of the foremost experts on historical recordings, once told me I truly play like a 19th-century pianist. I stopped holding back play exactly how I feel the piece, with rubato, voicing and expressive liberties (such as improvisation) that bring it to life in a personal way. This performance was recorded on a beautifully restored 1875 Steinway Centennial, brought back to life by the Chris Maene workshop. The instrument has a lyrical voice and a unique depth of tone that brings out the poetry of Chopin’s music. https://www.chrismaenecollection.be/e... An amusing detail: I used this same recording to create an April Fools’ joke, presenting it as a lost wax cylinder from the 19th century, supposedly performed by Karol Mikuli, Chopin’s student. It fooled quite a few listeners and sparked some lovely reactions. 🎧 You can listen to the “Mikuli version” here • NEW DISCOVERY !!! Chopin his Student ...
