February 14, 2014 Capitalism is a nimble shapeshifter. In this talk Jules Boykoff draws from the history of the Olympic Games to offer a theory of “celebration capitalism,” a form of modern-day economics that complements Naomi Klein’s “disaster capitalism” marked by neoliberalism: privatization, deregulation, and free-market rhetoric. Unlike disaster capitalism, which emerges during a catastrophic state of exception, celebration capitalism occurs in an exuberant state of exception and is marked by mass-media-trumpeted political spectacle, festive commercialism that rallies public backing for the Games, public-private partnerships that are often lopsided in favor of private entities in terms of input and risk, the feel-good claims of environmental and social sustainability, and a boon for the security industry and local policing units responsible for preventing terrorism and safeguarding the Games. Examining the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, the 2012 Summer Games in London, and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia demonstrates how celebration capitalism takes on distinct formations depending on political context. Jules Boykoff is the author of Activism and the Olympics: Dissent at the Games in Vancouver and London (Rutgers University Press, 2014), Celebration Capitalism and the Olympic Games (Routledge, 2013), and Beyond Bullets: The Suppression of Dissent in the United States (AK Press, 2007). His writing on Olympic politics has appeared recently in the Guardian, New Left Review, the New York Times, Al Jazeera, and Dissent Magazine. He represented the US Olympic soccer team in international competition, and currently teaches political science at Pacific University in Oregon, USA. http://www.julesboykoff.org
