(granular conjunctivitis, Egyptian ophthalmia) An infectious disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, that can lead to blindness. The incubation period is 6-12 days. It is the leading cause of preventable blindness of infectious origin in the world. (Transmission) • Direct contact with an affected person's eyes or nose. • Indirect contact through clothing or flies that have come into contact with an affected person's eyes or nose. (Symptoms) • conjunctivitis ("pink eye"): Irritation, ocular discharge, swelling. • trichiasis: Misdirected eyelashes. • photophobia: Sensitivity to bright lights. • Swelling of lymph nodes in front of the ears. (Complications) • corneal ulcer • blindness (Stages) 1. Infection causes a roughening of the inner surface of the eyelids, that can lead to pain in the eyes. 2. Breakdown of the cornea. 3. Blindness when the eyelids turn inward, in case of untreated, multiple episodes of reinfection, maintaining intense inflammation. (Treatment) • clean water: To keep sanitation. • antibiotics: azithromycin (oral), tetracycline (topical) • surgery: bilamellar tarsal rotation procedure (to direct the lashes away from the globe) Cf. recurrent corneal erosion
