John Lukacs

John Lukacs was a premier Twentieth Century historian that focused largely on World War II and the subsequent early Cold War. Born in Hungary in 1924 and raised by Jewish bourgeois grandparents, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1946 amid the Soviet Union occupation of his native country, not out of fear of communism but rather the Soviets. That background shaped his historical paradigm in which he equated conservatism with hate and liberalism with fear. A self-described reactionary, Lukacs praised Churchill for saving Europe by allying with Stalin and demonized Reagan as a scared liberal. Lukacs’ legacy is provided as a rich historical background of World War II and numerous quality historiographical works.
