Charles Friel, MD, has been a colorectal surgeon for 23 years. But he had fallen behind on his own cancer screenings. Learn more at: https://uvahealth.com/services/colon-... Transcript My name is Charles Friel and I'm a professor of surgery and the section chief of colorectal surgery here at the University of Virginia and I’ve been practicing here for 23 years. I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer just about a week shy of my 59th birthday. I got my colonoscopy largely because my wife had reminded me that I was way behind. As part of my diagnosis and part of my discussion with my surgeon Dr. Hedrick, we talked about the need for a temporary ileostomy which was a bag on my side. Obviously, like all patients, I wasn’t really excited about that and that was an extra thing for me to learn and put up with but I was able to kind of manage that with the help of my nursing team. They taught me how to care for my ileostomy and I had all the resources that I needed. Fortunately, I was able to make a pretty rapid recovery and you know within about a month I was actually seeing patients and I was even operating, even though I had an ileostomy bag. I was out with my friends playing some tennis. I think if you’re thinking about getting your colon cancer screening, whether it's under special circumstances or just because you've now turned 45, I would definitely tell you you should not postpone it.
