Strop auction URL. Http://m.ebay.com/itm/253080367140?_m... Carving a paddle strop with a hatchet and knife only. I used scraping to flatten the working face. Minimalist wood working. The strop will go on auction on Ebay, August 6th 2017. I'll leave a link here with details when I have them. My ebay user name is Paleotechnics. I have to put on a new piece of leather first and I'm leaving for the weekend but wanted to get this video out now. This video will also be referenced in one or two very cool ones I have coming up on scraping wood with knives. This one is actually just an offshoot of those. Blog and website: www.skillcult.com/blog Instagram and Facebook @SkillCult Scraping wood with a knife if very effective and useful. In this video I create a flat surface on a small piece of oak, using just a hatchet and a knife. Normally a block plane would be used for this. The point was to show that a flat surface can be made in the field with simple tools. This sort of minimalist woodworking is a valuable skill to have. The ideal hatchet for this would be a hewing hatchet, and I do own one. Carving hatchets are also popular these days. But you don't need either. With practice, passable flat faces and very good carving can be done with a regular camp hatchet. I would recommend a regular hatchet, probably with convex bevels for most people. Learn to do all kinds of stuff with that multi-use hatchet, and worry about specialty hatchets later.
