At this months meet up we heard from Peter Couchman of Irish Seed Savers, who shared his thoughts on the seven key things to focus on when it comes to growing an active membership base. Get involved in local action! Find your local environmental network and Public Participation Network here: www.len.ie About our guest speaker: Peter spent most of his working life in the consumer co-op movement in the UK, working on how to develop membership there. This included Oxford, Swindon & Gloucester Co-op, which came to be regarded as world leader on member engagement. He then spent a year at Co-operatives UK, the body for co-ops in the UK, researching membership strategies around the world. In 2008 he became Chief Executive of the Plunkett Foundation, set up by the pioneer of Irish co-operatives Sir Horace Plunkett, to take Plunkett's ideas around the world. Over the next eight years, they pioneered the idea of rural community co-operatives, with a strong emphasis on volunteering, to help people save their village shop or pub by taking control of it. He also worked around the world on this. He served on the board of Friends of the Earth in England and Wales in the early nineties having been active on local campaigns for some time. Peter moved to Ireland in 2016 and is now at Irish Seed Savers working on their supporter engagement.
