In 1963, a microphone cut out during Frank Sinatra's performance at the Sands Copa Room for sixty-one seconds. Sinatra fired sound engineer Carl Peterson on the spot without listening to an explanation. Two weeks later, Sinatra learned the microphone had a manufacturer's defect—a recall notice that never reached Carl. Sinatra showed up at Carl's new job at the Tropicana to apologize in person and offer him his job back plus five thousand dollars. This is the story of what Sinatra said in that sound booth, why Carl came back, and whether admitting you were wrong when you have the power to ignore it is integrity or just understanding that accountability costs less than everyone knowing you failed it.
