About 5 years ago, I became concerned that CPA BC was inflating the estimated median income to recruit new entrants to the profession. The size of the misrepresentation was so large, that it appeared to violate our own code of ethics. Clearly, auditors and accountants were granted a monopoly because of the need for accuracy in financial reporting. Associating ourselves with inaccurate financial information for an entity that might encourage users of that information to rely upon it to invest, lend or otherwise become involved in transactions with the particular entity, is clearly a massive violation. It is hard to imagine a more important investment than the investment in a career. However, when I reported this discrepancy, my concerns were disregarded, even though I was myself a professional member with more than 35 years of experience. More recently I found that CPA Ontario was taking the same approach to publishing median incomes of Ontario CPAs.
