Phillip Sear plays a Spanish-tinged 'Song of the night-watchman' published in 1885, by the French pianist and composer, Henri Kowalski (1841–1916). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kowalski, of Polish and Irish descent, studied under Marmontel at the Paris Conservatoire. From 1880, he spent ten years in Australia, and there is a fascinating article about his sojourn and his work generally here: tinyurl.com/ydaalj65 . He had a huge international hit with his 'Marche Hongroise'. "In mid-19th century Spain, the sereno served as a night watchman patrolling unlit city streets from dusk till dawn, calling out the hour and weather—such as "Las once y sereno" (It's 11 pm and all's clear)—to reassure residents and deter criminals. Often combining roles with lamplighters after reforms under Carlos III, they lit oil lamps, held building keys to let in late-night revellers (summoned by handclaps), raised fire alarms, and provided minor aid like errands. Poorly paid and typically Asturian men passing the job father-to-son, serenos acted as an informal police force in cities like Madrid, knowing local gossip and quelling disturbances amid sparse electric lighting." (Perplexity AI, 25 January 2026). The dedication of the piece to Pierre Schott suggests a member of the publishing family (the piece is published by Schott). However, the Pierre Schott who operated the Brussels branch of the company died of typhus in 1873, so the piece might have been published some time after it was written —unless there was another, later, Pierre Schott.
