Ethan was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at age 9 months. He had no concept of language, didn't make eye contact, and when you said "Where's the dog?" he would not look for it (a sign of poor receptive language). Because his older brother had autism, we took him to a developmental pediatrician and got his diagnosis and therapy started at age 9 months. It was too early to start VOCAL speech related therapy, but his speech language pathologist, Rosemary, and his special educator, Kristen, began teaching Ethan that there was a language type currency to get his needs met via pictures. This is my cute little baby learning the Picture Exchange Communication System or PECS. Rosemary slipped in some eye contact work by bringing the picture up to her face. This was a very successful bridge toward language development for us.
