This week's tune is Little Liza Jane (often called simply "Liza Jane") based on the playing of Jesse Presley "J. P." Fraley (10 July 1923-17 February 2011) of Carter Co., KY. He was the son of Richard Fraley (1872-1967) and Gertrude Hutchison (1885-1969). His Fraley ancestors came to the United States from Germany in the 18th century. (source: family genealogy) J. P.'s father played fiddle, and though J. P. was rather well known, I was not able to find out when he started to play. He was a Boy Scout, and received the Medal of Honor for saving a young man's life. In the early 1940s, he joined the three C's to help with the war effort, and as a young man joined the Air Force. He was stationed in Miami, FL as a cook and baker. He had a varied career, from working in the coal mines, brickyards, and as an engineer. He enjoyed fiddling, fishing, gardening, playing pranks, and telling stories. "He strived to retain as well as promote the eastern Kentucky style of fiddling so generations following him would understand its value." (source: obituary in the newspaper, The Daily Independent) Fraley married Doris Annadeene Prater (1925-1996), and together they performed at different venues around the world, including the Smithsonian Institute. In 1970, they established the Fraley Festival at Carter Caves State Resort Park. This tune is often referred to simply as "Liza Jane," and an alternate title is listed on TuneArch as "Poor Liza Jane," but I can't say that I've ever heard anybody refer to the tune by the latter title. This is one of many tunes in the "Liza Jane family," some of which are more closely related than others. The name was so prevalent that in The Fiddle Book, Marion Thede even included a separate chapter titled "Liza Jane and Railroads" and had this to say: "Through many of our folk tunes and ballads is the mention of a character called Liza Jane, who has taken her place among other legendary and mythical figures of folk-lore. It is not to be supposed that all of the numerous ballads, or even the stanzas in one ballad, had their origin in the same section of the United States, or arose during the same era." There are many floating lyrics that can be sung to our Old-Time TOTW #115 as well as to other tunes in the "Liza Jane family," as well as tunes that are not of that family. So, who was Liza Jane, and why is she so prevalent in Old-Time music titles and lyrics? Thede refers to her as "legendary and mythical," which emphasizes the sense of mystery behind her. All I can say is that the name Liza Jane (or Eliza Jane, or more formally, Elizabeth Jane) was very popular in 19th century America. It could arguably have been as popular (or more popular) as the female name "Lisa Marie" in the 1960s (though that certainly was due to the fame of Elvis Presley and the fact that his and Priscilla's daughter was named Lisa Marie.) So, Liza Jane seemingly does not refer to a specific person, rather, a "character," as Thede states. Recording of J. P.
