Satellite Images Show ISIS Destruction in Ancient City of Palmyra

Recent satellite images taken of the historic city of Palmyra, Syria display the full extent of ISIS’s destruction within the war-torn city. Palmyra is known as a UNESCO world heritage site and is famous for its Greco-Roman ruins dating back thousands of years. The site was recaptured by the Syrian government late last month after weeks of intensive fighting with ISIS. The city fell to the ISIS militants last May who went on to pillage and destroy the historic site. The Temple of Bel, once the best-preserved relic in Palmyra, was destroyed by ISIS last August, with the site now only having one gate and a few columns remaining. Another landmark, the Arch of Triumph, was bombed to pieces by militants last October. The hilltop citadel the Fakhredin al Maany, built in the 13th century, was also severely damaged during attacks from both ISIS and Syrian forces. Palmyra was one of Syria’s most important relics of the ancient world. The ruins housed more than 1,000 columns, a Roman aqueduct and a necropolis of more than 500 tombs.
