DESCRIPTION BELOW Reference Spots - 00:52 Materials and tools used 02:05 Disassembly and Cleaning 07:37 Applying Thermal Pads, Paste, and Heat Sinks 10:16 Finished product look and temp test Hey guys, this here is a little mod I cooked up while researching this here graphics card; The Asus GTX 970 Strix. When I bought my card, it was running fine, but base upon a couple forum crawls I went on, some of the cards were suffering from unreasonably high VRM temperatures. Asus claims these are fine temperatures and within the limits of the card working, but seeing a VRM get to 90+ degrees celcius (some users over 100) gets it a bit too close to the 110c rating that they are supposed to operate under. This is the result of me looking at the cooler and finding a simple method to help that VRM temp get quite a bit cooler than stock with a minimum of permanent altercation to the card. If you guys have this problem with your Strix and want it to last a bit longer, especially under any hefty overclocks, you should try this out! Expected results from doing this on 2 Asus 970 Strix cards is around a 20c lower temp at LOAD and 10c lower temp at IDLE on VRM temperatures, using HWInfo to read the temperatures. HWInfo link to see your own temps (if possible) https://www.hwinfo.com/ *** Materials used in this tutorial *** Asus Strix 970 Thermal Pad - 1mm and 0.5mm - I used found here: https://www.amazon.com/ARCTIC-Thermal... you should shop around for price though. Thermal Paste - I used Arctic MX-4 - Preferably use something that is not electrically conductive. (Optional) Memory Heat Sinks - There are tons of these around, find short enough ones and you might be able to sneak them under the cooler on the memory chips as well. I just use 2 for the VRM on the end of the card. -Towel of some kind to clean the old thermal paste and pad away - I used paper towel but use whatever. -Arcticlean or isopropyl alcohol to clean the old thermal paste and pad away and to prepare the surfaces for new material. arcticlean found here: https://www.amazon.com/ArctiClean-60m... -Phillips screwdriver with small bits - I used bit size 000 on every screw in the tutorial. (Optional) ESD Safe tweezers from Ifixit, or just something you know you can use to get chunk pieces of old thermal paste away safely without damaging the PCB like a toothpick would be fine. find the tweezers here: https://www.amazon.com/iFixit-Tweezer... Thanks for watching and let me know how it goes if you attempt this mod! ____________________ Twitter: / periodicinsane Facebook: / official.periodic.insanity Twitch: / periodic_insanity ____________________
