James Kalm is running around taking care of errands in midtown (like picking up a repaired video camera), when he spies some intriguing painting shows and finds it irresistible not to record. “Lee Krasner The Edge of Color Geometric Abstractions 1948-53” presents a selection of important but probably underknown works from the artists early period in the Springs, Long Island. Ironically this show contains a series called the “Little Image” paintings, easel sized works made up of small squares of oil paint with dripped calligraphic cells in enamel, contrasted with “Number 2” a bold geometric picture which at seven and a half by eleven feet, was the largest painting made by Krasner to that time. “Eddie Martinez: Wavelengths at Mitchell-Innes & Nash continues works from this painters “White Out” series. Starting with colorfully rich paintings of butterflies and potted flowers, Martinez goes back into the compositions and selectively repaints the images with white, varying the medium and textural qualities of the pigment. This may be a sardonic gesture to parody a minimalist subtilty, or rather a personal approach to creative erasure.
