Well, the most common ones with a mild cold include a sore throat, runny nose, blocked nose, sneezing and coughing. Though, if you get a heavy cold, you may also get headaches, muscle aches, a temperature, pain or pressure in your sinuses, which are the cavities in your face, and a loss of taste and smell, but these ones are a lot less common. With the flu, you can experience all the same symptoms, but instead of coming on gradually like a cold does, the symptoms can come on quite quickly. You’re also more likely to get things like muscle ache, a temperature, headaches, chills and weakness. Now, if you’re watching this video and you think you might have a cold or the flu, most people do recover themselves after a few weeks. But it is important to know how to take care of yourself and know when to seek help. At the time of recording this video, some of these symptoms, such as a persistent cough, a temperature, and loss of taste and smell, also overlap with COVID-19. The main symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are: a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature) a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual) a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal If you have any of the main symptoms of COVID-19, even if they're mild: Get a PCR test (test that is sent to a lab) to check if you have COVID-19 as soon as possible. Stay at home and do not have visitors (self-isolate) until you get your test result – only leave your home to have a test. Check if people you live with need to self-isolate. WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE: Now, with most colds and flus, you should usually be able to recover at home without needing to see a doctor. Though, there are some cases where it’s important to get advice from a healthcare professional because you may be more vulnerable than others. This includes, but is not limited to, if you are pregnant or over 65 years old, if you are concerned about a child’s or baby’s symptoms, if you have any long-term condition such as diabetes, COPD or kidney disease, or if you have a weakened immune system due to medication that you take, HIV, or are undergoing chemotherapy. Other cases include if your symptoms ever suddenly get worse, if you get a very high temperature or have shivering and chills, or if your symptoms haven't improved after three weeks with a cold or after seven days with the flu. If at any point you experience sudden chest pain, breathlessness, or cough up blood, you should call 999 for an ambulance. Now, with both colds and the flu, even if you don’t have any of these symptoms but know within yourself something is seriously not right, speak to your healthcare professional.
