This intriguing documentary follows Terry Gilliam on his journey (/battle) to direct Twelve Monkeys. There’s some valuable footage for directors of Gilliam on set with an unusually sparse edit showing how he works with actors. What’s really interesting here is seeing him working with Hollywood stars and how it’s a similar process and experience that many of us have had with actors on smaller films. I particularly like the scene when Gilliam and Bruce Willis have a difference of opinion on how his character would jump out of a car boot. My view is that Willis is right in what he says, but Gilliam needs the shot to look a certain way. Their conflict on this and how it resolves is telling of the process of directing, and the conflict between character “truth” and what a director needs visually.
