Cost: I booked around 6 weeks ahead using the Virgin ticketing app (NOT sponsored ) and paid £49 with my railcard, committing to this specific departure. . Date of travel: 25 September 2025 Departure: 14:52 On a normal day , this trip will take around 4 hours on a direct train . This train did continue to London arriving around 3 hours later than I did but I was glad to be off by Newcastle . I have noticed that on virtually all trains in and out of Aberdeen , there are quite a few booked seats that remain unoccupied. I wonder if some had arrived by Northlink ferry and decided to switch to the earlier one leaving at 09:52 . I found the lighting on these trains absolutely ridiculous. Why did I use virgin ticketing app and not trainpal on this trip? I was able to earn 98p in LNER perks (which I'm planning to redeem on LNER's London-Inverness train at some point)on this trip . Booking via Trainpal and claiming the LNER perks later is possible but quite some bureaucracy . I've done it once or twice but I don't find the bureaucracy worth the saving. However , for bookings via the Virgin ticketing app , I found uploading the LNER ticket absolutely seamless . I earned 294 virgin points on this trip. In addition, this app might make it just about viable for me to splurge on a night in one of Virgins hotels . While there were full meals onboard, there was practically nothing I could have due to dietary restrictions. Between the time I'd booked and the time of travel, the menu had changed and I wasn't told about this . While LNER do offer decaffinated coffee, I stuck to the proper coffee on this journey because I needed to start editing as soon as I got to my hotel . Have you found these trains or similar ones used in other parts of the UK fall short in some way? If so , please tell me more about these short comings in comments.
