The Ritual - Spine-Chilling Child of Loki Creature Jötunn - Explained - An Underrated Horror Gem!

The MCU is not the only movie franchise that dealt with Norse mythology and in particular, the God of Mischief, Loki. 2017’s ‘The Ritual’ is a British supernatural horror film that dives into an intriguing blend of horror and Norse mythology. Directed by David Bruckner and written by Joe Barton, the movie is an adaptation of the 2011 novel of the same name i.e. The Ritual by Adam Neville. This Netflix sleeper hit revolves around four college kids who reunite to go hiking in Sweden, to honor their friend who had been brutally murdered around six months ago. As the plot unravels, the story takes a turn when the group decides to use a shortcut through the wilderness. A series of horrifying visions and nightmares pan out for the cast in the unwelcoming forest. They sense the presence of something malevolent at the helm of their misfortune. To make matters more interesting, the movie heavily deals with psychological undertones, especially with reference to the protagonist Luke. Adam Neville was evidently inspired by ‘The Blair Witch Project’, the works of H.P. Lovecraft, and of course, Norse mythology, and Bruckner and Barton’s adaptation have captured that essence perfectly. Music composer Ben Lovett composed the score for the film. He has worked with Bruckner before in the 2007 film ‘The Signal’. Bringing everything to life, the cast consists of Rafe Spall as Luke, Arsher Ali as Phil, Robert James-Collier as Hutch, and Sam Troughton as Dom.
