It serves as a grim reminder of the country's dark past and the struggle for freedom. STORYLINE: In this stark room, from ropes similar to these, 3,500 South Africans were hanged during the years of apartheid. 130 of those hanged were African National Congress (ANC) patriots, whose crime was to fight oppression. The original gallows were destroyed in a furnace when the death penalty was abolished in 1995. But this replica - authenticated by prison guards who worked in the gallows - serves as a grim reminder of the human cruelty. Visitors to the museum are able to witness the condemned prisoners' final hours. Roused at 6am, time was set aside to speak with a chaplain - there was no time for a shower or breakfast. At 6:55am the prisoners climb the stairs to the gallows. They are asked to identify themselves for a final time. Then their heads were draped in white hoods and they were led to the gallows, where up to seven men could be hanged at once. The footsteps on the wooden floor boards show where they would have stood. At precisely 7am the floor would give way and the prisoners would be executed by hanging.
