Otaki: The Original Waiotauru Road Part 2

Old maps show a Waiotauru Road that stretched from Pakuratahi to Otaki Forks, with side roads to Renata and the Akatarawa Saddle. Last year I tried to find traces of the road between Akatarawa Saddle and Maymorn Junction, with some if limited success. Papers Past has references to a road built by the Maymorn Timber Co and these references line up pretty well with the road shown on old maps. There are traces of old roads between Otaki Forks and Maymorn Junction. The problem is the more recent Odlins Road, which is very much in evidence around Waiotauru Forks and southward muddies things somewhat, as do roads to the old mills at Otaki Forks. There are unusually flat and even areas to the north and south of Waiotauru Hut, which do look like an old road. and they do match old maps. Suggestive perhaps but maybe not definitive.
