Ocongate ➡️  Tinqui ➡️ Upis 📈Elevation Gain: 1,082 feet 🥾Distance: 8.13 miles ⛰️ Trailhead Elevation: 13,710 feet 🛖 Campsite Elevation: 14,540 feet We first stopped in the small town of Ocongate to stock up on 4 days of supplies for meals that our guides supplied. The town was full of culture and of course…dogs 🐕 We began the Ausangate trek with beautiful sunny weather. Only .25 miles in, we already surpassed 14,000 feet (something that never happens that short a distance in Colorado 😅) Once we got to the trailhead of our hike, we had a delicious breakfast and met our horsemen and tour guides. We hiked from Upispampa through many remote villages with many stream crossings until we arrived at the small town of Upis. The private cabins were absolutely amazing with views of Mount Ausangate outside your window. The delicious lunch was a 3 course meal and in Peru, the lunches are usually bigger portion size than dinners. After lunch, had an optional hike to Upis Lake (which I obviously did) which took about 2 hours round trip. Then headed back for an amazing dinner and enjoyed the first starry night of the trek.
