In this Kings and Generals Age of Conquest: the Fall and Rise of China Series episode we discuss the Donghak Rebellion. In the late 19th century, Korea was a battleground of conflicting interests between China and Japan, both vying for influence. The Donghak Rebellion, fueled by peasant discontent against corrupt officials and foreign exploitation, emerged as a significant uprising. Led by the Donghak movement, which sought to address social injustices, the rebellion gained momentum as peasants rallied against oppressive taxation and Japanese merchants' exploitation. Amidst this turmoil, the assassination of Kim Ok-keun, a reformist leader, further escalated tensions. Kim was murdered by Hong Jong Yu, allegedly acting on orders from the Korean king, which incited outrage in Japan. The Japanese public viewed the assassination as a direct affront, leading to calls for military action. As the rebellion intensified, King Gojong of Korea sought assistance from China, prompting both nations to mobilize troops. Japan, wary of Chinese intervention, quickly dispatched its forces, leading to a standoff. The situation spiraled into the First Sino-Japanese War, marking a pivotal moment in East Asian history. This conflict not only altered the balance of power in the region but also set the stage for Korea's struggle for independence and the rise of nationalism, as the once-subservient nation sought to assert its identity against both Chinese and Japanese dominance.
