This epic midrange honk turned out to be a key ingredient in Green’s supernatural sound, along with his epic ‘59 Les Paul of course. But it’s not just about flipping a magnet 180 degress, Duncan based the Green Magic pickups on some of the finest vintage PAFs around, with a formula based what MJ used in the Duncan Custom Shop builds years back. When isolated, these humbuckers are all about vintage PAF tone with Alnico II magnets, excellent clarity by not being overwound and resistance of 7.7k on the neck and 8.7K on the bridge to help with output balance. With both pickups on and out of phase, you can back off either pickup volume and explore sonic sculpting brought on by the shifting frequencies being cut, from classic midrange quack to just a touch of low end roll off and mid emphasis.
