PACIFIC PALISADES — May 9, 2025 — For the first time since the Palisades Fire devastated the Pacific Palisades earlier this year, reconstruction has officially begun. While filming his weekly fire recovery update in downtown Pacific Palisades, Fabian Lewkowicz of Santa Monica Closeup witnessed a major milestone: the framing of a new commercial structure. The site, located at 839 Via de la Paz—the longtime home of Rodeo Realty—is believed to be the first building to rise from the ashes in the fire zone. Crews from Asher Construction Inc. were seen pounding two-by-fours and securing plywood—marking the unmistakable rhythm of rebirth. A posted sign at the property notes a projected reopening in December 2025. Construction workers were outfitted in high-visibility safety vests and hard hats as they worked on framing the structure. Nail guns rang out across the lot, punctuating the return of building activity to a once-devastated landscape. On this same day, Santa Monica Closeup also documented recovery activity along Via de la Paz, where demolition crews were active on multiple properties. Structures left uninhabitable by the fire were being torn down by heavy machinery, clearing the way for eventual reconstruction. Meanwhile, utility crews from Spectrum were observed installing cable infrastructure, signaling early restoration of essential services. The Palisades Fire, which ignited on January 7, 2025, destroyed 6,837 structures and scorched more than 23,448 acres before being fully contained on January 31. Fueled by drought and 100 mph winds, the fire displaced over 100,000 residents across Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and surrounding areas. Recovery has unfolded in stages. Phase One was managed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which removed hazardous materials such as propane tanks, lithium-ion batteries, and chemicals. Once a site was cleared, it advanced to Phase Two, led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This phase involves the demolition of fire-damaged structures and the removal of large-scale debris. Only after these phases are complete can rebuilding begin. Today’s progress marks the first true signs of vertical recovery—timber and nails transforming an empty foundation into a beacon of hope. With each beam raised, the Palisades edges closer to renewal. '''''''''''''''''''''' 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗲.
