As commented in the previous Module of this course, the United Nations can take action on the issues confronting humanity in the 21st century, such as peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, terrorism, humanitarian and health emergencies, gender equality, governance, food production, among others. Thus, the UN provides a forum for its members to express their views in its different organs and bodies, such as the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and other bodies and committees. By enabling dialogue between its members, and by hosting negotiations, the Organization has become a mechanism for governments to find areas of agreement and address and solve problems together. This second chapter, as the second part of the UN contextual framework of this course, will explore the structure of the United Nations, its most important bodies and their subsequent composition, functions and procedures. All of these organs were established in 1945, included in the Charter (Chapter III: Organs) when the United Nations was founded (see Module 1, origin of the UN) which are the following: The General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic, the Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice and the Trusteeship Council.
