A SLAP lesion is an injury to the superior glenoid labrum. The term SLAP ("superior labrum anterior posterior") was initially coined by Steve Snyder. This lesion causes nonspecific shoulder pain and it is more common in overhead throwing athletes and laborers involved in overhead activities. The prevalence of SLAP lesions in patients undergoing shoulder arthroscopy ranges between 3.9 and 6%. SLAP tears can be difficult to diagnose based solely on history and physical exam. Ultimately, a definitive diagnosis is made using arthro-MRI or diagnostic arthroscopy. Surgery may be considered in cases where nonoperative management fails to reduce pain and improve shoulder function.
