Welcome back to TheNorthEastern – your home for railway action across the North East! In this video, filmed on Saturday 11th October 2025, we head to Hartlepool station to catch an exciting variety of trains passing through as part of ongoing East Coast Main Line diversions. With engineering work affecting the main route south of Durham, services have been diverted via the Durham Coast Line, providing a rare opportunity to see a mix of passenger and freight traffic on this scenic coastal stretch. The star of the show today is a pair of Colas Rail Class 56 locomotives, working the Rail Head Treatment Train (RHTT) through Hartlepool. These classic 56s—rugged, powerful, and unmistakably loud—are a real treat for enthusiasts, especially as RHTT season gets into full swing across the UK network. The sound of their 3,250 hp engines echoing off the old station buildings is something every fan of heavy diesel traction will appreciate! In addition to the Colas 56s, we also catch a brilliant surprise: three Locomotive Services Limited (LSL) Class 20s running together on a light engine move! Seeing three of these heritage English Electric Type 1s in multiple is a fantastic sight, and the combination of their classic sound and retro livery makes this one of the highlights of the day. It’s rare to see this formation, and they certainly turned a few heads among the locals and railfans alike. Other highlights in this session include a variety of passenger services operated by LNER, TransPennine Express, and Northern, all making their way along the diversion route. The mix of modern high-speed units and heritage diesels makes for a fascinating contrast—proof that the UK rail network still has plenty of character and variety left to enjoy! Throughout this video, you’ll see a combination of stills and live footage taken from multiple angles around the station. The lighting conditions were mixed, with a few clouds rolling in off the North Sea, but that only adds to the atmospheric charm of the footage. The sound quality has been carefully preserved to capture the full diesel roar of the locomotives as they power through. If you enjoy seeing freight, special workings, and classic traction in everyday settings, then this is definitely a video for you. Be sure to watch right to the end to catch all the action, including a few unexpected movements that weren’t on the schedule! 📍 Location: Hartlepool, County Durham 📅 Date Filmed: 11th October 2025 🚆 Featuring: Colas Rail Class 56s on Rail Head Treatment Train (RHTT) 3 LSL Class 20s on light engine move LNER Azumas on diversion TransPennine Express Nova 3 sets Northern Class 156 & 158 DMUs 🎧 Best enjoyed with headphones!
