The main objective of “Open Hospitals in Syria” is that of reconstructing the social fabric and ensuring free access to medical treatment for poor Syrians by way of the enhancement of three non-profit hospitals managed by religious congregations. It’s an initiative that was born of an idea from Cardinal Mario Zenari, the Apostolic Nuncio in Damascus for the last 14 years, and carried out by the AVSI Foundation with the support of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development. Cardinal Zenari, in a brief meeting with journalists, asked communications media not to forget Syria, which still today doesn’t show any signs of rebuilding, now 12 years on from the beginning of the war.
