Intervertebral disc degeneration is an aberrant, cell-mediated response to progressive structural failure. The causes of this degeneration are varied and complex, they include: premature aging, lifestyle and work factors, diet, and smoking. The degeneration is not considered pathological until one experiences pain that can be correlated to the degeneration. In this program, three spine and genetic specialists present research that tries to unravel the web of mysteries involved in disc degeneration. First, James Kang, MD, Professor and Vice Chairman of Orthopaedics at the University of Pittsburgh discusses the complex biological and biomechanical structure of the intervertebral disc and how this knowledge can be used to devise treatment strategies. Next, David Eyre, PhD, UW Professor of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine talks about the molecular anatomy of collagen fabrics that make up a disc. Finally, Roger Hartl, MD, Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery and Chief of Spinal Surgery and Neurotrauma at Weill Cornell Medical College argues that spine professionals need to do more research into the kinetics, or time progressions, that occur in degenerative disc disease.
