Council Says "Prioritise Agriculture"… Then Opens the Door to Solar & Mining

Tamworth Regional Council adopted the Tamworth Regional Rural Lands Strategy 2025 on 16 December 2025 – and on paper it sounds great for farmers: "Prioritise Agriculture and Preserve the Productivity of our Rural Lands". The intention? "Preserving rural land primarily for agricultural purposes." But dig into the fine print and it's loaded with double-speak. The executive summary pushes "compatible growth of emerging industries, particularly renewable energy projects" while council plans to "educate" us on sustainability despite signing the NSW Right to Farm Policy. Then come the objectives – especially the golden get-out clause: "To permit development for purposes where it can be demonstrated that suitable land or premises are not available elsewhere." Translation: No funny business on RU1 land… unless someone says "no alternatives" – then solar farms, mining, and more can roll right in. Farmgate stalls? Restricted. Mining potential? Protected over farming. It's agriculture first… until it's not. From a real Tamworth farmer's perspective: this feels like a sell-out dressed up as protection.
