Václav Pichl Concerto in D Major

Program Notes Czech composer Václav Pichl lived from 1741 to 1805. He spent most of his working life in Prague, Vienna, and Milan, with a brief spell at Grosswardein (now Oradea, in Romania). His output includes 88 symphonies, some 30 concertos, numerous chamber works and pieces for the violin (his own instrument), not to mention dozens of divertimenti, a few operas and many sacred works and even some fugues. Pichl’s Concerto in D Major, while not one of the more well-known classical era bass concerti, is a charming piece that is the epitome of the classical style. The two cadenzas that will be performed were written by Klaus Stoll, former principal bass of the Berlin Philharmonic.
