He is also the brother of Ülgen, the God of goodness and good spirits. His domain is on the seventh floor of the sky, and he is often depicted as a young man sitting on a white horse, wearing a helmet and a white outfit with a quiver of arrows on his back, and a bow in his hand. Mergen is highly valued in the Turkic culture as the god of knowledge and reason, guiding people in their intellectual pursuits. When people are in need of advice, or find themselves thoughtless about an idea, they turn to him for aid. Mergen gives them the advice they seek and helps them to think well and do good, ensuring that knowledge is used for the greater good of humanity. He treasures knowledge above all else and believes that it holds both good and bad elements. However, he does not classify any wisdom as inherently good or bad. Instead, the proper use of reason, knowledge, and wisdom is what decides its moral value. Despite being omniscient, Mergen understands that there are extremes in everything, and he uses his power to banish evil from the earth. Overall, he believes that humans have the freedom to choose how to utilize their knowledge and wisdom, and this determines the outcomes of their lives. He is revered for giving people the freedom to use the gifts of wisdom, reason, and knowledge that exist on earth. Every time he battles with an evil spirit, it is the result of the choices of individuals on earth. However, if reason and wisdom are wielded for the benefit of society, there can be abundance wherever they are applied. Due to his quick-wittedness, Mergen has become the symbol of intelligence and thought. His power and influence are such that he was eventually depicted with double wings, enabling him to travel to the remotest corners of the world, and eliminate all kinds of evil. Thanks to his archery skills, Mergen can occasionally vanquish evil spirits from the sky. Legends hold that whoever looks up to Mergen in the sky, and requests a wish from him, will have their wish granted. In Turkic languages, the word ‘Mergen’ means bowman or archer. Conversely, in the Mongolian language, Mergen translates to ‘wise’ or ‘genius,’ reflective of his significance in cultures across Central Asia.
