California is one of the most active seismic zones in the world. The San Andreas Fault is the junction point of two tectonic plates destined to separate. It stretches across San Francisco and Los Angeles. It is 1,300 km long and 140 km large and currently the most surveyed activity in the world. Why? How is it threatening to locals? The fault could trigger the biggest earthquake ever, aka “The Big One” which would reach 9 on the Richter scale. One thing’s for sure, there is a deadline. Seismologists predict a 70% risk that the next one happens before 2032. With a research center using the most advanced techniques available, including an array of sensors installed along the fault or drones combined with Lidar technology, scientists prepare for the worst and work to predict the unpredictable. Locals too prepare for the worst as 28,000 volunteers stand ready to provide first aid and organize evacuations.
