More than 150 species of mammals have been seen on Mount Kilimanjaro. Rare sightings include large animals such as buffalo, giraffes, and elephants. Here are some common species you might encounter on your adventure. Blue Monkeys have a misleading name because they aren’t especially blue. Their coats are gray and olive, with patches of white and black. Chameleons are among the few animals able to change skin color. They can move each eye independently, allowing them to look in two directions at once. Colobus Monkeys are born all-white, then develop their black-and-white coats with age. They have no true thumbs; instead, they use hook-like fingers for swinging in trees. Bush babies are nocturnal primates with big, round eyes for excellent night vision. Their “baby” nickname refers to their child-like cries heard at night. The White Necked Raven features a prominent white band on its back. Ravens are one of the most intelligent animals, said to be smarter than a 7 year old human. Finally, the Four Striped Mouse often appears at Kilimanjaro campsites.
